Written by a curious imp
[edit]

I'm an imp, and I love to hide things. Glittery gems, shiny baubles — and this one time, I found an instrument with just one string on it. Apparently, you play it using an "arrow." However, I have never been good at finding things.
I found a really shiny silver gem the other day, and I knew just where to hide it! But then I forgot where I hid it, and I couldn’t find it anymore. That is when I decided enough was enough. One way or another, I would learn how to find things!
One day, I saw this beautiful woman with brown hair who seemed to be amazing at finding things. She told people where they could find all sorts of statues, and they’d find them in no time at all! Imps and other fairies are forbidden to show themselves to humans, but it would be fine for me to eavesdrop on her, right?

So I’d hide in her tent every day, listening to her speak with other humans. She was always so nice, though she didn’t always give advice for free. Apparently, humans would write down things they knew and then give them to other people in exchange for shiny things. That seemed very fascinating. That is when I started writing this book of mine. Maybe someday, I could give this book to someone else! Until then, I would keep it hidden somewhere — after I’ve learned to find things, that is.
Watching her every single day for an entire year, I took in all the information I could. But eventually, I realized something: If humans exchange information for shinies, then shouldn’t I have been giving her shinies, since I was eavesdropping on her all this time? I felt guilty, which I had never done before!
I had to make it up to her, so I started to gather as many shiny things as I could. She had taught me so much that I knew just where to look to find shiny things. In just a single week, I obtained a large stash of shiny things that I was gonna give to her. I just had to wait for the right timing.
One day, a crying girl asked the brown-haired woman for help finding her brooch. She described how it looked, and that it was her only memoir of her brother. I didn’t really know what a brother was, but the appearance sounded familiar. That night, I checked up on my stash; lo and behold, there was a brooch matching her exact description! I had never considered it until now, but had I been stealing things from other people all this time? I felt so horrible that I ran crying back to the brown-haired lady.
“Lady! Lady! I know where that brooch is!” I told her. I didn’t care that I wasn’t allowed to show myself to humans. I had expected her to be surprised to see an imp, but she smiled and wiped my tear, calming me down.
“Why are you not surprised to see me? I’m not supposed to show myself to humans.” I asked her with a sniffle, but she merely laughed.
“I am an expert explorer. I wouldn’t be worth my salt if I couldn’t find a cute imp eavesdropping on me every day for an entire year.” I started to blush. No one had called me cute before, or complimented me at all really. I asked her to follow me to my stash, but in my hurried distress, I had completely forgotten where it was! I started to panic again, but the woman told me she could find anything so long as she knew roughly where to look.
She gave me a pen and paper and told me to sketch a drawing of where my stash was. Once I did, it didn’t take her long to find it. I was amazed by her skill, and overjoyed that the crying girl would be able to get her brooch back. I apologized to the woman, both for stealing the girl’s brooch and for not paying her for all her information. I was just about to cry when she patted me on the head and thanked me for my honesty. It felt so good to be praised and complimented.
“If you want to make up for this, why don’t you help people find things they’ve lost?” she suggested.
That was an amazing idea! I could eavesdrop on people and hear if they were missing anything. Then, I could go find it for them. They would be happy to have their lost possessions returned, and I wouldn’t have to show myself.
So that is what I have been doing ever since. I have gotten really good at finding things, and I wanted other people to share in my joy of helping people find things. So now, I will share with you the secret trick I discovered: The most important part about finding things is that you have to ask for help sometimes! Whenever I can’t find something, I’ll write a note to the brown-haired lady, and she’ll give me a hint! It’s much easier to find things if you ask for help from others.
P.S. Once you’re done reading this, please return it to the pretty brown-haired lady.
